Black Commencement: A Celebration of Legacy and Identity

There’s Power in the Walk

Each spring, Cal Poly’s Black Commencement ceremony provides a culturally meaningful and celebratory sendoff for graduating Black students. Hosted by the Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC), the event recognizes more than just academic success — it honors the resilience, community, and cultural identity of Black students navigating a predominantly white institution.

A Tradition Rooted in Culture

Black Commencement is a distinct ceremony held in addition to the university-wide commencement. The event includes traditions such as the singing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and a cultural rite of passage. Graduates are presented with a handwoven Ghanaian kente stole — a vibrant and symbolic piece representing pride, heritage, and academic accomplishment.

The kente stoles are provided through a long-standing partnership with retired faculty and supporters of the BAEC, serving as both a gift and a connection to a greater legacy of Black scholars at Cal Poly and beyond.

Community-Centered Celebration

The ceremony offers an environment where students, families, alumni, faculty, and staff can come together to celebrate in a space where Black culture and identity are centered. The event often features alumni speakers, student reflections, and musical tributes that highlight the strength and diversity of the graduating class.

Graduates are encouraged to share personal stories of growth, challenge, and achievement, affirming their experiences and inspiring future students. Black Commencement is not just a milestone but a reminder of the importance of belonging, recognition, and visibility in higher education.

More Than a Ceremony

Black Commencement symbolizes the culmination of a journey shaped by dedication, support systems, and cultural connection. Many students describe it as a moment that validates their college experience in a deeper, more personal way.

It’s also a continuation of the BAEC’s mission: to create spaces of affirmation, advocacy, and excellence for Black students at Cal Poly. By celebrating the whole student — mind, identity, and culture — the center reinforces its commitment to educational equity and community empowerment.

Looking Ahead

As the university community grows more diverse, Black Commencement continues to be a cornerstone celebration that honors both individual achievement and collective progress. It reflects a powerful truth: students thrive when their stories are acknowledged, their identities affirmed, and their accomplishments uplifted.
